Introduction to Cloud Computing Platforms

Cloud computing is a term used to describe the delivery of hosted services over the internet. A computer cloud is a set of services which are availed on the internet. These set of services provide computing infrastructure which is cheap, personalized, scalable and QoS enabled. A computing cloud consequently enables companies to use resources availed on the cloud instead of building and maintaining the computer infrastructure themselves. A cloud computing platform, on the other hand, refers to the setting whereby developers of applications and software are able to create as well as write their applications and then run them in the cloud. The cloud computing platforms also offer the service providers a chance to share their resources with service subscribers through the cloud. So as to understand cloud computing platforms, it is essential to look at the categories of cloud services.

Categories of cloud services

There are three basic categories of Cloud services. The first one is Software as Service (SaaS) category which implies the services on the cloud whereby the users of these services are enabled to access the database as well as the software provided in the cloud. The SaaS application runs in the service provider’s servers and therefore they can be accessed on the internet. The SaaS application is hosted in the service provider’s server as a service and it is consequently availed to the service subscribers. The good thing about SaaS is that through the cloud platform, the service providers will install and operate the software within the cloud and therefore the users of the service access it online and they will not have to install the application on their computers.

Attached services form the second category of cloud services and they imply the additional functions that the applications within the computing cloud have. Through the cloud platform, users access specific services as well as the attached service within in. An example of this is the iTunes of Apple whereby through the desktop application, one can play music and additionally access the service of buying new music and video content. Since the services are based on a particular application, they are thought to be attached to it.

Cloud platforms form the third category of the services implying the services whereby users of the cloud get a chance to create their software and run and then the service subscribers can access the application there. Instead of developing its own custom foundation, such as the creation of new SaaS application, cloud developers build a cloud platform where all the services from different software can be accessed.

Composition of the cloud platform

A cloud computing platform is composed of three parts. The foundation is the first part which provides the basic functions required by the applications. These requirements include the operating system that provides a basic interface for the application to use, as well as a local support. The cloud infrastructure services are the second part and it includes storage services as well integration service. The cloud application services are the third part and it includes the search services, the SaaS application services as well as the mapping services. The cloud computing platforms are a new area and they have an important role in the computing realm and it is necessary for software designers and internet users to know what is available in the cloud.
